CHAPTER III

Jak was feeling good as he led his warparty that was not actually a warparty, as they had fought next to nothing, back into Fair Field Village.

Or as good as he could, under the circumstances.

The journey had been a strong success. They had lost no one, suffered no serious injuries, had found almost every cache they’d gone to, as well as a good store of extra food and resources at the outposts and their old village, and had even found four more survivors.

All in all, a great day.

They managed to make it back to the village some time after sun’s apex, and he found himself eager to keep the good luck rolling, though he knew that he needed to know one thing before he could make his next move.

As he motioned to the others to continue into the village, he approached one of the boarder guards.

“Any news?” he asked.

The karn grunted, shaking his head. “Still no corrupted. We saw nothing today.”

“Hmm. Has the runner returned from the embyr lands?” Jak asked.

He had his answer from the way the karn immediately stiffened and flicked a glance at Nessa.

“Yes,” he replied, “they have our people there still.”

Jak cursed softly, but he wasn’t surprise. “I promise, we will get them back.”

“You have much more than my thanks for that, and for all that you and your tribe have done,” he replied, “I only wish I could go with you.”

“I wish it, too. I would welcome you and all your tribe to battle at my side. But don’t worry, the corrupted are hiding somewhere, and the Revek as well, and you and your brethren will be there beside us as we stand together against them.”

The karn warrior broke into a broad smile. “And break our clubs over their heads.”

“Yes,” Jak agreed.

He and Nessa and Keeza walked into the village, already hunting for the runner and for the village leaders to determine the next course of action.

Or, more specifically, to inform them of it, as Jak was already fairly set.

There was so much to do.

Within a few moments, Jak had the audience he sought. Nessa and Keeza, Ven and Ema, Ripper, and Tem, who he had put in charge of the small scouting party.

“All right, Tem, what exactly did you encounter on your scouting journey?” Jak asked.

He noticed a handful of others hanging around the edges of the area where he had called the meeting, working and listening at the same time. He’d taken to having these meetings outdoors like this and allowing others to listen, since it was a faster way to spread news than having to personally address everyone each time there was any kind of development.

“Wetstone and Gather remain empty, and we found no extra supplies or materials. Verdant Valley still holds several small outposts and many caches of supplies, as well as many plants that grow through winter. It seems mostly untouched by the death magic,” he reported.

There were several sighs of relief at that. Jak had known of the Verdant Valley for a time now, but it had always been a risky proposition.
